Project Description Here
King of Prussia – PennDOT joined Montgomery County officials today to cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the official opening of the new off-ramp from westbound Interstate 76 to the intersection of South Gulph and South Henderson roads in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County.
The ramp opening marks the completion of the $10.5 million project to build two new ramps to connect westbound I-76 with this main intersection. The on-ramp to I-76 West from South Gulph and South Henderson roads opened on May 4.
“This new interchange along westbound I-76 is going to improve travel in the King of Prussia area and help relieve traffic congestion from the nearby Gulph Mills Interchange,” said George Dunheimer, PennDOT assistant district executive for construction in the Philadelphia region. “The new off-ramp along I-76 will also enhance access to businesses in the area, including those along South Henderson Road, South Gulph Road and Route 202.”
The exit number for the new I-76 West off-ramp to South Gulph and South Henderson roads is exit 329. In addition to building two new ramps, PennDOT’s contractor erected a sound wall alongside the new westbound on-ramp, widened both South Gulph and South Henderson roads, upgraded traffic signals, and added sidewalks on both roads to enhance pedestrian access.
Construction began on Dec. 1, 2009 and the project was scheduled to be completed by Nov. 10, 2011.
Glasgow, Inc. of Glenside, Montgomery County was the general contractor on the $10.5 million project. Construction was financed with 100 percent federal ARRA funds.
The project was designed by Boles Smyth Associates, Inc. of Philadelphia. Final design, utility relocation and property acquisition costs of $3.3 million were financed with 100 percent state funds.
The Upper Merion Transportation Authority invested approximately $1.25 million to fund preliminary engineering and environmental clearance, as well as to dedicate three properties to PennDOT. Since the interchange project was identified on the township's Comprehensive Plan, the authority led and cultivated support to develop a partnership with PennDOT, Federal Highway Administration, Montgomery County, local elected officials and the public.

This fall, PennDOT will open the second ramp, which will be an exit ramp from westbound I-76 to the intersection.
“This new interchange connects the westbound expressway with a key intersection in the King of Prussia area, and the new ramps will help relieve traffic pressure from the Gulph Mills Interchange,” PennDOT District Executive Lester Toaso said.
In addition to building two new ramps, PennDOT’s contractor erected a sound wall alongside the new westbound on-ramp, widened both South Gulph and Henderson roads and added sidewalks on both roadways in the area of the new interchange.
